There are two words you don’t often hear when discussing downloading music, free and legal. Our new music downloading service is both: FREEGAL! Palm Springs Public Library has joined Library Ideas™ network of Public Library websites that offer access to over 7 million songs including Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists. If you don’t have a Palm Springs Public Library card, now is the perfect time to get one.
The Freegal™ Music Service will allow us to increase the size and diversity of our collection by offering access to over 28,000 music labels from 85 different countries. Under the terms of the agreement, registered card holders of the Palm Springs Public Library can download three Freegal Music tracks in MP3 format each week at no direct cost via http://www.palmspringslibrary.org. The library will underwrite the purchase of the music. Starting in August, the Freegal Music Service will also have popular music videos for download. Videos will count as two downloads.
The Freegal Music Service has free mobile apps for registered cardholders of subscribing libraries. The Freegal Music apps are available in the Apple® App Store and Google Play®. From your home computer, you can create wish lists of songs you would like to download in future weeks and can also transfer downloaded songs to your iTunes account.
“Sony Music has an incredibly expansive and popular catalog and we are really excited to partner with them on this, a very important product for libraries,” said Brian Downing, co-founder of Library Ideas. “The participation of so many leading independent labels will also help the library reach as many patron groups as possible.”
