The Palm Springs Public Library Receives a Substantial Donation from the Estate of a Long-Time Library User

The Palm Springs Public Library is most grateful to accept a substantial donation from the estate of Richard W. Mechling. Mr. Mechling, who passed away in November of 2008, was a long-time Coachella Valley resident and patron of the Palm Springs Public Library.

This generous gift will enable the Library to supplement and reinstate some services and materials including youth and family literacy programs, electronic database subscriptions, equipment purchase and replacement as well as materials expenditures. “This gift could not have come at a more opportune time, said Barbara Roberts, Director of Library Services, “with the current economic crisis and recent budget cuts, this generous donation will enable the Library to restore some of what had to be cut from this year’s budget.”  This extraordinary gift is the single largest bequest the Library has received since Ms. Roberts became Director of the Library in 2003.

Mr. Mechling, who was 75 at the time of his passing, was born in Butler, Pennsylvania.  Upon graduating with his undergraduate degree he moved west and served as a teacher and headmaster at the Palm Valley School from 1959 until 1978, and then as Business Manager at the Gulf California Broadcast Corporation (KESQ-TV) from 1979 until his retirement in 2000. Library staff remembers Mr. Mechling fondly and are very grateful that he so generously recognized the importance of the Library in his life in this way.
